The Lew Tabackin Trio

Our fourth show on SUNDAY, JUNE 7th completes the Jazz & Blues Showcase spring season.  Jazz icon LEW TABACKIN headlines. The renowned flutist & tenorist who's delighted worldwide jazz audiences for more than six-decades brings his N.Y. trio to our series for the first time.  Noted sidemen bassist BORIS KOZLOV & drummer JASON TIEMANN complete it.

Growing up in Philadelphia, Tabackin's path to jazz stardom began with an early interest in music. By age eleven he was introduced to the flute, the only instrument available in his music class. His affinity for jazz developed in high school, as did his interest in the tenor sax. Important growth in his playing followed by earning a scholarship to study at Philly's Conservatory of Music. Jazz critic Scott Yanow suggested it's where his playing style grew widely different on each instrument: hard bop on sax and delicacy on flute.

Following conservatory graduation and serving in the U.S. Army, jazz opportunities opened for Tabackin beginning in the mid-'60s in N.Y. in groups led by noted jazzmen guitarist Tal Farlow, bassist Chuck Israels & trumpeter Clark Terry. The late '60s also saw him playing in bands of both the "Tonight Show" and the "Dick Cavett Show."

In the early '70s, he followed the "Tonight Show's" move to L.A. There his previous work in Clark Terry's band proved eventful, since it's where he met Toshiko Akiyoshi, the acclaimed pianist & composer. Marrying in '69, they formed the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band in '73. Renamed "Orchestra," it moved to N.Y. in '82 where it continued its successful thirty-year run of performing live and recording.

Among other jazz greats Tabackin has performed and recorded with are Maynard Ferguson, Benny Carter, Freddie Hubbard, Duke Pearson, Shelly Mann, Phil Woods, Billy Higgins, & Howard Alden. His distinguished resume also contains over a hundred recordings as a leader, sideman and co-leader in the Akiyoshi-Tabackin ensembles.
